Pundit’s curse

Grays Athletic have parted company with manager Justin Edinburgh and chairman Mick Woodward has installed himself as manager until the end of the season. It’s an unsurprising move but a slightly baffling one nonetheless.

Grays aren’t going to achieve anything this season promotion-wise but it may be time to re-asses if they’ll get pulled into a relegation fight (although I think they’re a little too far away from the bottom four for that to happen). Putting an interim manager (especially the Chairman, who is unlikely to stay in the hot seat for any length of time) in until the end of the season with a couple of months to go doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Under Edinburgh, Grays had enough about them to stay firmly mid-table. If you’re going to replace him, why not wait until the summer?

With Woodward sticking himself in, there’s not going to be much of a chance to restructure the squad until a new manager comes in, and having Woodward in charge for such a long length of time may deter future managers if they think the Chairman may undermine them.

Grays needed a shot in the arm. They didn’t need said arm hacking off. Perhaps I’m being disingenuous to Woodward, but I can’t see too many sides losing much sleep over playing the Blues for the rest of the season.

A few days after I asked the question where they go from last weekend’s defeat to Exeter. Downwards would now appear to be the answer.
